Discovering Italy: Latium Holiday

Latium

A reference point? Rome – open city

Alongside the monuments, churches and works of art in the capital, there are a thousand different fascinating attractions in other towns that are well worth visiting. Really ancient history, marked by different and important civilisations like the Greek, Roman and Etruscan, which have left numerous traces of their civilisation and culture on the land.

Lazio is one of the most precious regions in Italy. Just think of Rome, the eternal city, navel of the world, famous for the richness and beauty of its monuments, churches and works of art. Tourists from all over the world are enchanted by the Imperial Forum, throw coins into the Trevi Fountain and make a wish, sit on the steps in Trinità dei Monti and walk along the city roads admiring the buildings and squares. However, there are also other lovely art towns that are unforgettable for their beauty. In the heart of Ciociaria, on a hill that dominates the valley we find Frosinone a very rich historic town, fascinating and surrounded by other beautiful towns like Anagni and ancient Civitavecchia. To the north we find ancient, noble Rieti, with its beautiful palazzos where the noble Roman families, popes and emperors used to pass their holidays. Viterbo, near to the sea and rich in history and art.

Lazio focuses a great deal of attention on tourism, for holidays in the art towns and on the coast, the hills or lakeside. In fact not only history enthusiasts come here but also lovers of nature and relaxation can find some very attractive modern resorts, at the seaside or on one of the numerous lakes spread around the region, not only in the area of the Roman Castles, which are definitely one of the main attractions, but also to the north of the city, where the land is mainly occupied by the old volcanic craters of Mounts Sabatini, Cimini and Volsini. The largest lakes are Bracciano, Vico and Bolsena, situated along a virtual straight line, which leads from the gates to the city almost to the borders of Umbria and Tuscany.

FROSINONE, THE TOWN OF THE VOLSCI

After long-lasting resistance against the incursions and power of Rome, this Lazio town was subject to various domains over the centuries.

IN THE HEART OF THE PONTINA PLAIN

Littoria, which Mussolini had built in 1934, is our modern Latina. Nature, history and the sea are the dominating features of the Latina province.

RIETI, ANCIENT CAPITAL OF THE SABINES

Despite the sieges, wars, sacking and devastation over the centuries, Rieti has managed to conserve some very precious monuments and architecture.

ROME, THE ETERNAL CITY

The capital of Italy is considered throughout the world as an open-air museum. In this Lazio city there are endless monuments and beauties to be admired to learn about and appreciate the past and present grandeur of Rome and its Empire.

VITERBO, A CITY FULL OF PALAZZOS

The Province of Viterbo is characterised by a mixture of nature and important historic towns; the Bolsena Lakes and Vicon on one side, Tarquinia, Vejo and Vulci on the other.

ABBACCHIO ALLO SCOTTADITO

This is one of the specialities from Rome with very old country roots which is always served at Christmas and Easter.
