Discovering Italy: Campania Holiday

Campania

A journey through the centuries of italian history

Campania is known throughout the world for its beautiful sea and coastline, the artistic treasures, architectural and cultural heritage that can be found everywhere, where the tourist can discover history that covers the arc of several centuries.

Naples is the ideal starting point for a fascinating journey along one of the most beautiful coastlines in Italy. The unmistakeable warm welcome given by the people, the beautiful Gulf of Naples, the mild climate all make this one of the loveliest and most interesting towns in the world. Over the centuries it has been subject to numerous different foreign domains and the town is a mixing pot of art, culture and languages. Behind the city the impressive volcano Vesuvius stands out against the sky, the only active volcano on the European continent, which gives a really impressive view from the top.

Near to Naples there are some very important resorts known for their artistic wealth and splendid scenery. First of all, Pozzuoli, an important industrial centre and tourist destination to discover the ancient monuments, springs and countryside. You can catch a boat here to go to the islands of Ischia and Procida. Ischia is the largest island in the Gulf of Naples, famous for its mild climate and luxuriant vegetation, today a very refined and exclusive tourist resort for its beautiful landscape and spa centres. Procida rises out of the sea like an enchanted castle: small and flat, it is beautiful with the lovely pastel coloured houses of the fishermen, which have remained intact and unchanged in their original style, and the pervading silence everywhere.

From Naples you can begin excursions to discover other attractive areas like the Sorrento coast, with its beautiful panorama of the entire Gulf of Sorrento.

AVELLINO AND ITS HISTORY

This beautiful town is situated in the heart of a large basin in the Campania Apennines, dominated by the Picentini and Partenio mountains. The province of Avellino is characterised by various elements, varying from winter tourism to visits to all the towns with their wealth of history and monuments.

CASERTA AND ITS PALACE

Famous for the royal palace built by Vanvitelli, the town also comprises two other unique beauties: the San Leucio District and Old Caserta. The province of Caserta has some very important fascinating historic towns, like Capua, Piedimonte Matese, Santa Maria Capua Vetere and Sessa Aurunca.

FASCINATING AND MYSTERIOUS ROADS OF BENEVENTO

The town is situated on a hill that slopes down to the plain, where the River Sabato flows into the Calore. It is a land rich with typical hamlets and villages of great historic wealth.

GENTLE SALERNO

Famous tourist centre for its Mediterranean climate and its sea, a town rich in historic and architectural beauty. Besides the considerable industrial development there are also important resources in the province for summer tourism.

NAPLES. THE “GREAT, BRIGHT AND KIND CITY”

This is how the philosopher Giambattista Vico described the capital town of Campania in the 18th century. The Neapolitan province is one of the richest and most beautiful in the peninsula thanks to the variety of the places to visit.

INSALATA DI RINFORZO

A recipe for a Christmas side dish which is always served in Naples.

DOWN THE AMALFI COAST

Overlooking the splendid blue sea, the Amalfi Coast, with its towns and ancient traditions, offers the visitor a mix of colours and flavours typical of the Mediterranean.

The natural treasures of Magna Graecia

The white sandy beaches washed by blue cobalt seas, the resinous perfume of marittime pine forests and the warmth of the sun distinguish the National Park of Cilento and the Valley of Diano as a destination for nature explorers and sun lovers.

A VOLCANO OF EMOTIONS

For whoever loves adventure or long walks in suggestive and unusual places in unspoilt natural settings, the ‘Valley of Hell’ is the ideal destination.
